Our Mission

Munchkin Land Preschool's mission is to provide exceptional childcare built around the "Whole Child Approach", the developmentally appropriate learning and development practice principles, and nurturing classroom environments.

Children's experiences shape the way they process the world around them. Munchkin Land Preschool respects all children as unique individuals who learn in a variety of ways, from various cultural backgrounds and home environments, who possess different strengths and weakness, and have different feelings and ideas. Classroom teachers go above and beyond to really get to know the "Whole Child" to set them up for success in the classroom! Treating children as valued competent individuals and providing an environment that meets physical and physiological needs allows children to feel safe and form secure adult attachments.

Early experiences have a strong influence on a child's development and learning. To best support and stimulate our young learners, all classroom curriculums are based on The Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards (RIELDS). These standards outline age specific learning and development expectations for children at benchmark ages (9 months, 18 months, 24 months, 36 months, 48 months, and 60 months), and are organized into the following 9 subgroups: Physical Health and Motor Development, Social and Emotional Development, Language Development, Literacy, Cognitive Development, Science, and Social Studies (all subgroups may not apply to every benchmark age). RIELDS are also appropriate for duel language learners and children with disabilities.

Munchkin Land Preschool teachers use the RIELDS as a framework to develop comprehensive age appropriate curriculum's and supportive classroom environments. We believe ALL areas of development are important! In addition to participating in rich academic activities, children:

  • practice communication and problem solving skills interacting with peers and teachers

  • develop their confidence working on self-help tasks

  • develop fine motor skills experimenting with manipulatives and sensory materials

  • exercise large muscles on the playground and during classroom creative movement activities

  • celebrate creativity, creating individual and group artwork

  • explore endless open ended play opportunities

Classroom teachers track acquired skills using classwork, photos, and written observations, and organize the documentation into personal student portfolios that follow the children throughout their preschool career at Munchkin Land Preschool until Pre-K graduation.
